About the show

Picture yourself on a surfside patio, sun-kissed and salt-haired as the unmistakable twang of electric guitar pierces the air...

Manzanita y Su Conjunto played a pivotal role in shaping the vibrant tapestry of Peruvian music. The electrifying fusion of cumbia and guaracha, infused with coastal rhythms, ignited dance floors and resonated across the nation. Berardo ‘Manzanita’ Hernández, the maestro behind the ensemble, carved a niche in the musical landscape with his self-taught guitar virtuosity.

One of the founding fathers of the electric guitar-driven psychedelic craze of the 60s & 70s, the late Manzanita and his band paved the way for the genre that has taken the global tropical music scene by storm in recent years. The heady blend of cumbia and guaracha and his lightning-fast finger lines resounded with audiences of the era.

The late '60s witnessed the popularity of psychedelic music from the West. However, the military coup of 1968, led by Juan Velasco, changed the musical landscape in Peru. Imported rock was eschewed (and even banned), replaced by a renewed focus on local traditions. New bands flourished, and a unique genre emerged: Peruvian cumbia. Manzanita y Su Conjunto seized this moment, blending Cuban guaracha rhythms with their scintillating electric guitar. Their sound became synonymous with this newly created genre.

From smoky dance halls to beachside gatherings, the music became an anthem for a generation. His prodigious son, Berardo Hernandez Jr - known as Manzanita Jr - follows in his late father’s footsteps to keep the psychedelic mastery of the era alive, performing regularly across Latin America, inspiring contemporary artists and keeping the flame of Peruvian musical innovation alive.

In Manzanita’s honour, he brings to the UK direct from Lima for the first time this summer with full band formed of the top Latin musicians from around the UK.
